Over the last few months I have been actively working on building my portfolio. That means I have been looking for friends, family, dogs, lamp post, rocks and mostly models that are willing to conduct a photo session in exchange for pictures/prints rather than $. The last few months have been a journey as I seek people to trade services to populate our portfolios.
So I started with a common place on the internet to find people that know how to pose and be in front of the camera. ModelMayhem.com. First of all, this site is very good for finding models, photographers, and makeup artist in the industry. If you want to become one of these professions, I suggest you start there. Be warned, it is a very interesting place on the internet. There are some amazing artist and models on this site, but as with anything, there is a creepy element out there, so be careful!
My biggest issue with the site is that people put up some of the most horrible profile/portfolio pictures that you can imagine. They have posted pictures of themselves at a keg party, a terrible selfie, or just an all around out of focus, bad picture. Even worse, they found a “photographer” that just isn’t good at what they do. They don’t take time on the basics, color correction, solid composition, or simple blemish correction. View their work before you book.
Friends, if you are going to put a profile picture on a professional website like Model Mayhem or LinkedIn, I am begging you, please make sure they are good. Here are some good suggestions for everyone on this topic.
Feel free to ask me questions, I love to help.
