Last weekend I was able to shoot at a local wrestling tournament. “Mo, how did you end up there?”
Great question! I’m glad you asked.
Earlier this month I had a photo shoot with the talented, Jirenia S. Her session was completely awesome, and the pictures came out FANTASTIC.
See all the pictures from our session, here.
When I’m on location with a client, I get several opportunities to talk to them as we change locations, or figure out the next shot. While chatting it up with Jirenia, I discovered that she’s on the wrestling team.
WHOA! – Yes, this is from Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. What can I say, it is part of my generation, and yes it is a pretty stupid movie, but it made me laugh. A lot.
I couldn’t believe this 5’3,” 102 pound stick of beauty was also a wrestler. NO WAY! (Sorry Jirenia, I just told the world your weight. Don’t hurt me, please!)
Once I heard this fun factoid I couldn’t withhold my enthusiasm and I blurted out, “You HAVE to let me shoot a match! PLEEEAASSEEEEE!” I proceeded to beg her and her mother to keep me updated on the season schedule, and they did.
This past Saturday morning I headed to Colony, Texas where over 450 wrestlers were in attendance, 50 of them female. Fifty? Back in the day, that was unheard of for female wrestling, even in the WWF. I couldn’t believe it. Their skill surpassed all my expectations! There were even a few females wrestling in their weight class against the boys. Impressive!
Jirenia did well, but unfortunately lost the first match. Afterward, I could tell that she was not pleased with her performance. I could see it in her eyes that she needed to redeem herself.
Side note: Anytime I hear or read the words “redeem yourself,” all I see and hear is a scene from one of my favorite movies. Dumb and Dumber.
Once she completed her first match there was about a 45 minute break and then it was her chance. She had a scrappy opponent, but Jirenia had the “Eye of the Tiger” and was ready. As soon as the match started, they spent a few seconds circling and slapping away each other’s hands as they reached for a wrist or arm to control – then it happened!
Jirenia suddenly lunged forward hoping to capture a leg and take her opponent to the mat. She got both legs, and I was ready with my camera. Jirenia picked her up and body slammed her with authority! The move was so powerful it knocked the wind out of the wrestler, and seconds later, she was able to pin her to end the match.
The six frames I captured of that move are freaking amazing. It was so good I had to share with everyone. Enjoy.
Observations to take note of as your review the shots:
Over the next week or so I will be helping Jirenia and her mom put these images into a collage of some sort to display this sequence of strength, power and hard work. This was my first wrestling tournament and I have to say that I was very impressed with the competitors. The drive, the intensity and athletic ability was something to behold.
The best part, it only cost me some time and a $3 admission fee. It was worth every penny to get some great images and witness raw competition.
